Essential Job Functions - WHAT WILL I DO AS AN INTERMEDIATE TYPIST-CLERK?
- Produces abstracts of judgment, executive notices, and similar documentation requiring high accuracy or independent judgment in selecting materials.
- Produces sophisticated charts, forms, statistical, and similar documents from rough drafts, requiring skill in arranging tabular material, setting up forms, and utmost typing accuracy.
- Process documents according to a specified and technical procedure for such purposes as formulating property descriptions and recording and indexing court papers, transcripts, and legal processes.
- Check documents for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with legal and other requirements.
- Respond to inquiries and offer information to the Public regarding regulations and procedures; prepare and file legal forms, applications, and permit requests; act as a special receptionist or counter clerk.
- Keeps records requiring particular knowledge, discrimination, and judgment in the selection, compilation, or computation of data to be included, such as cost data records and distribution and control ledger, which can be posted without extensive knowledge of bookkeeping principles.
- Maintains clerical controls where work is divided among personnel performing separate parts of an entire operation.
- Searches records and files for data where judgment and discrimination are required in selecting or abstracting material.
- Answers correspondence requiring data selection vital in formulating the reply, referring unusual cases to a supervisor's approval.
- Estimates the amount due and collects fees.
- Exercises minor supervision over the work of others as needed.
- Compares or segregates documents where particular knowledge of the function and more than a routine check for accuracy are involved, as in auditing warrants or purchase orders.
- Operates office machines such as calculators incidental to the performance of other duties.
- Routinely access office equipment such as video display terminals, word processors, or personal computers to input data, perform computations, or produce documents, not requiring the formatting or programming of such equipment as needed.

Requirements WE ARE LOOKING FOR INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE: Option 1: Six months of office clerical experience involving typewriting in the service of the County of Los Angeles or in districts under the jurisdiction of the County of Los Angeles
-OR- Option 2: One year's office clerical experience involving typewriting outside the service of the County of Los Angeles
-OR- Option 3: A certificate or Associate of Arts degree in clerical procedures or office administration from an accredited university*
Special requirement information: *To receive credit for the required degree and/or certification, you must attach a legible copy of the official diploma/transcripts and an official letter from the accredited institution that shows the area of specialization and/or a legible copy of the official certificate at the time of filing or within seven (7) calendar days of the end of the filing period. TYPING SKILL REQUIREMENT : Ability to type at the rate of 40 net words per minute. The following applicants are NOT required to take the Department of Human Resources typing test: - Those candidates who currently hold or have held a typing position with the required net words per minute in the service of the County of Los Angeles.
- Those candidates who have taken and passed a Department of Human Resources typing performance test with the required net words per minute. Passing scores on record with the Department of Human Resources will be transferred automatically.
- Applicants who have met the typing requirement in another Los Angeles County department must attach a copy of their typing certificate to their application or send to DHRClericalExams@hr.lacounty.gov within seven (7) days of the end of the filing period.
- Those who have applied and passed with the required net words per minute on the "TYPING TEST -SCORE-BANKING ONLY" exam. Passing scores on record with the Department of Human Resources will be transferred automatically.
WITHHOLD INFORMATION: No withholds will be allowed for this examination. Experience, certificate, or degree requirements must be fully met and indicated on the application when filing.
LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver's License or the ability to use an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
PHYSICAL CLASS: Physical Class II - Light: This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring a light physical effort, including occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.
